SAN DIEGO – Adult film performer and producer Ruben Andre Garcia pleaded guilty in federal court today to sex trafficking charges, admitting that he conspired with the owners of the adult websites GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys to fraudulently coerce young women to appear in sex videos. Most of the videos created as a part of the conspiracy were shot at hotels or short-term rental units in the San Diego area.

Since they wouldn’t help, she was on her own, and went “on a rampage,” she said, tracking down instances of her video posted online and reporting it to platforms hosting it as non-consensual porn. The victims’ sex acts were posted on the GDP and GDT websites.

Michael James Pratt disappeared in the summer of 2019, just before he was indicted on federal conspiracy and sex trafficking charges stemming from what prosecutors said was a decade-long scheme to con hundreds of teens and young women into appearing in adult videos for the website he owned. In actuality, the co-conspirators were posting the videos on GirlsDoPorn, GirlsDoToys, and PornHub, one of the world’s most heavily-trafficked porn sites. “This defendant lured one victim after another with fake modeling ads, false promises and deceptive front companies, ultimately devolving to threats to coerce these women into making sex videos,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman. “Even when victims told Garcia how the scheme had devastated their lives, he showed no regard for their well-being.

Garcia told the women that the videos would be published only on DVDs and sold overseas. As well as the GirlsDoPorn watermark, the 12 videos hosted on the deepfake website also have a watermark of US company Akool, which offers generative AI services, including a “face-swapping” tool, to marketing professionals. Multiple legal proceedings against the creators of GirlsDoPorn, people affiliated with the website, and Pornhub’s parent company are ongoing or have been completed—with criminal charges being issued against several GirlsDoPorn organizers in October 2019. The owners and operators of GirlsDoPorn knew the type of women they wanted to appear in their amateur porn videos—college-age millennials—would not agree to casually participate in the porn industry. After all, these women grew up in the Internet age, where amateur porn has been rampantly available for years. On top of that, many instances of their peers’ sexual exploration through sexting had traveled down several slippery slopes, including cases where teens had been criminally charged for sharing x-rated media they took of themselves. In January, a US judge awarded $US13 million ($17.5 million) in damages to 22 women who the court found had been coerced and tricked into making pornography by the owners of GirlsDoPorn in videos hosted on Pornhub and elsewhere, according to US media reports. Prosecutors say numerous women were lured by the defendants through the promise of modeling jobs, flown to San Diego, then were threatened with lawsuits and canceled return flights home if they backed out of filming pornographic videos.

The GirlsDoPorn operators knew this, and they wagered the Does’ shame over appearing in porn would likely ensure these victims would not take the site’s management to task for this fraud. Notwithstanding the potential bias that might be inherent in such self-reporting, the findings cast doubt on the stereotype of the exploited, abused, and broken woman forced into porn servitude. The results discussed here are in line with those that I reported in an earlier post that seemed to dispel the notion that porn actresses were “damaged goods”—albeit it is instructive to note that the former porn actor Dave Pounder suggested otherwise when I interviewed him last summer. Even if porn actresses suffer no more sexual trauma than other women, combine 75 lifetime lovers with considerable drug experimentation, and you have to wonder about their mental health. But when it came to criticizing the actual, existing adult-film industry—sure, she could do it with the best of them, and with a lot more inside knowledge than most.

Althaus’ suit accuses Aylo and ECP of aiding and abetting sex trafficking, profiting from sex trafficking and advertising a victim of sex trafficking. When the Department of Justice seized and shut down Girls Do Porn in 2019, MindGeek removed videos of Althaus, but it was temporary. Since then, MindGeek has reposted videos of Althaus made by Girls Do Porn, her suit alleges.

Wolfe admitted he was aware that the names and social media accounts for some women were posted on another website controlled by Pratt, resulting in severe harassment of the women by internet trolls. Still, Wolfe and others continued to assure recruits that their videos, and identities, would remain secret. In the complaint for damages against Mindgeek it was alleged that victims had sent the company “complaints detailing the fraud and coercion they were subject to by Girls Do Porn” but the company had not ended the partnership. The first court case on behalf of victims was lodged in June 2016. It had uploaded numerous explicit videos to Pornhub and other public websites. Pornhub removed these videos after charges against Girls Do Porn were filed by US authorities.
